Exploring the Paradise - Kashmir Valley

  • Dec 30, 2018
  • 14 min read

Kashmir is recognized as the Paradise from long time. Even though it is the hotbed of major conflicts between India and Pakistan, including armed conflicts, it was never disregarded as dangerous to travel in Kashmir, at least in tourist circuits. The mesmerizing valleys, the rivers originating from glaciers, the natural skyscrapers "the Himalayas", the snowcapped peaks, the ever welcoming people of Kashmir, the unique cuisine, have always welcomed travelers from all corners of the world.

How Did we plan:

As a youngster growing up, I always wanted to visit the "Paradise Kashmir" and travel across the valley to experience the true beauty with my own eyes. As, I became increasingly aware about traveling and found an interest in identifying places to visit and come up with itinerary which covers good number of places to visit, in a limited time, I had already come up with a tentative itinerary for Kashmir.

The various blogs on Kashmir Travel, helped us a lot in coming up with our own custom itinerary.

Specially, the blogs from Vargis Khan, were useful in identifying the right time and route to be taken to explore some of the less explored regions of the Paradise such as Gurez Valley, Aru Valley, Lidderwat etc. And finally in 2018, after a much wait, finally the time came for the itinerary to be put to use, and no time is the perfect time, as my honeymoon tour to Kashmir "the paradise on earth". So, right after our marriage, we planned the Kashmir Tour which we called it "Kashmir Dreams", in End of April (April 27th) which will continue till 10th of May.

We reached Gulmarg within 2 hours (just 65kms ride) and checked into our hotel room which we booked previous day.

Day-3: Gulmarg to Pahalgam (South Kashmir)

Next morning, we strolled around Khilanmarg for a chilling morning walk and then we started our journey towards Pahalgam (South Kashmir). As soon as we crossed Srinagar, we could see Armed Forces Pickets every 1km on the South Kashmir road toward Anantnag (the hotbed of conflict zone between Indian Army and Local Anti-India Terror Forces).

Once we reach Pahalgam, we checked into our hotel room and after freshen-up, we head for visiting Baisaran (Mini Switzerland as the locals call it). It was uphill trek of about 3kms (one-way). We opted for trekking rather than sitting on a pony ride (locals will be behind you requesting to take pony ride and advise against trekking, but trek is quite easy). The place was really good at the foothills of mountain range and long lush green meadow like garden, which is really nice to spend an hour or two in the evening.

Later we visited the Lidder River – There are a few wooden bridges all along the riverbanks for great view of the small river stream which comes straight from the Kolahoi Glacier.

The short ride to Aru Valley so much packed with Scenic beauty that, you will feel that you have seen it all, just on the way to Aru Valley.

Below are key places and food Joints we were able to pay a visit:

  • Chandanwari: This is one of the starting places for Amarnath Yatra (the other starting place is Batal, which is after Sonmarg). Also starting point for Shesh Nag & Nilnag treks.

Day-5 & 6: Exploring Aru Valley

Our highlight of the entire Kashmir Tour was our 3-night's stay at Rohella Guest House in Aru Valley, Pahalgam. Our hosts at Rohella, made sure that we feel absolutely at home. The small village of Aru is spectacularly beautiful, villagers engaging in all sorts of small activities like farming, herding their sheep’s and horses, people engaging in small shops and some being travel guides for tourists showing them around Aru Valley and managing home stays or guest houses.

We were strolling around Aru Valley without any certain plans and just enjoying our leisure moments and playing a game of cricket with Local youngsters. The food at Rohella was amazing home food and the host Abdulla made everything possible to make our 3-Nights stay worth it.

He came down with us to Pahalgam for some work and took us to Rafting at Lidder River Stream which was a lifetime experience.

Day-7: Aru (Pahalgam) to Gurez Valley (Bandipora Sector)

After our 3-night stay at Aru Valley, we started our journey towards yet another less explored gem of a Valley in Kashmir, called “Gurez Valley”. Gurez valley located at the extreme north of Indian Administered Kashmir region, bordering the Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (Azad Kashmir) region.

We took a taxi from Pahalgam to Srinagar and met our Taxi Driver who is going to take us to Gurez Valley (a 6-hours arduous journey via Bandipora and then cross over Rajdhan Pass into Gurez Valley).

The Rajdhan Pass (Altitude: 3557mtrs) was fully covered in snow and it took further 2 hours to reach Gurez Valley.

As soon as we reached Gurez Valley, we were greeted with the Rajma Chawal for our Late Lunch and spent our evening Exploring the Gurez Valley market area of Dawar (Administrative Town of Gurez Valley). The people of Gurez are of Dard Tribe and a lead a very hardy life (an ancient tribe of hilly people spread all over from Afghanistan till the Kashmir Region). Day-8: Exploring Gurez Valley - Ride to Tulail, Gujran Sector

The next day, we had plans to visit the remote regions of Gurez Valley where the road runs in parallel to the border of Pakistan Occupied Kashmir. Our Taxi was ready, we crossed village after village and Army Check post after check posts and witnessed the beauty of remote regions of Kashmir. We could see from our own eyes, how life is so hard in these remote villages of Kashmir, where there is no paved road, no hospitals or schools (except few Army Medical camps), no luxuries of modern-day life, yet people are so happy and content at what they have.

We had few crochet toys (which were homemade woolen toys), which we donated to the small kids at the last village which we could get to (Gujran Village). The mud road still goes ahead and reaches Dras (a strategic military road) but this road is only open for Army Vehicles after the Gujran Village check post.

In the evening we had one shorter visit and this time we were lucky enough to reach the last village before the India – Pakistan Border check post at Chakwali (Chakan da Bagh Border post).

All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our 2-night stay at Gurez Valley which is truly an unexplored region of Kashmir Valley.

Below are key places and food Joints we were able to pay a visit:

  • Dawar

  • Tulail Valley

  • Chakwali Border Post

Stay at:

  • Dawar Guest House (JKTDC Tourism Dept. operated), Dawar, Gurez Valley, J&K.

Day-9: Gurez Valley to Srinagar

Next Day, we had 5hours of arduous journey from Gurez Valley to Srinagar. By the time, we reach Srinagar, there was a Shootout between Few Terrorists and Security forces on-going close to Central Srinagar. So, somehow, we dodged the blockade of Security Forces and were able to reach our Hotel in Srinagar. Next day, we had plans of Visiting South Kashmir (Shopian & Yusmarg), but due to many un-fortunate incidents in the valley, we decided to skip it and instead visit Kargil & Leh. And I head out to book the next day bus tickets to Leh @JKSRTC Reception nearby, when I went out, I could see, how stone pelting was going on between locals and Security forces (J&K Police) after the encounter. This is the reality which all needs to accept about the Kashmir valley. The struggle of locals & the difficulties faced by the Armed forces who are tasked to stop militancy in the valley.

So, once I got the bus tickets booked for next morning, we spent the rest of the evening just walking on the Dal Lake boulevard where we felt safe close to our Hotel Room.

Below are key places and food Joints we were able to pay a visit:

  • Rajdhan Pass (Altitude: 3557mtrs)

  • Wular Lake – Largest freshwater lake in Asia, close to Bandipora Sector.

  • Plan Bandipora

  • Dal Lake (Shikara Ghat)

Stay at:

  • Walisons Hotel, Dal lake Boulevard, Srinagar – J&K.

Day-10: Srinagar to Kargil (via Sonmarg JKSRTC Bus Service)

On day 10 morning, we boarded the mail bus of JKSRTC from Srinagar. Our destination for the day was Kargil via Sonmarg. The scenic beauty on the way and numerous high mountain pass on the way made our journey a memorable one. And since it was a mail express bus service, there were only 12 passengers on the bus, and entire back side was filled with Parcel boxes.

Afternoon we had lunch at Sonmarg, and by evening we reached Kargil. The landscape changed drastically once we crossed Zozila pass and we were deep into cold desert of Kargil (well known for the 1999 Indo-Pak war.

We took a long walk around our hotel in Kargil and explored the city center amid biting cold of 5 degrees Celsius. Next day, we would continue our journey from Kargil to Leh on the same bus.

Stay at:

  • Hotel Siachen, Khumaini Chowk, Kargil, J&K.

Day-11: Kargil to Leh (via JKSRTC Bus Service)

Next day our journey was mostly un-eventful. We be-friended one of our fellow passengers from Germany, who was on a long tour of India from 5months and was on his last destination Leh & Ladakh and shared some travel stories. We crossed numerous Mountain passes and finally reached Leh in the Afternoon.

We rented a scooter from Leh Market and reached our Hotel Shanthi Guest house, close to Shanti Stupa, Leh. After freshening up we went to Leh market for lunch and then started our “explore Leh” expedition to cover some interesting places in Leh city, before getting a chance to enjoy snowfall while coming back to our hotel room. Leh is an interesting yet crowded city which has rich heritage forts & monasteries of Buddhist heritage.

Below are key places and food Joints we were able to pay a visit:

  • Lamayaru – On the way Leh (Bus Journey)

  • Sankar Gompa (Buddhist Monastery), Leh.

  • Soma Gompa & Leh Palace (Grand Heritage site of Leh)

  • Central Asian Museum

  • Tsemo Maitreya Temple

  • Shanti Stupa

Stay at:

  • Shanti Guest House, near Shanti Stupa, Leh.

Day-12: Exploring Leh

Next day, we planned to head out of Leh City a bit and visit some places closer to Leh.

We had our return bus (JKSRTC) on the same day afternoon from Leh Market. So, we spent whole morning riding around Leh and visit some of the places closer to Leh, such as Thikse Monastery which is a grand marvel of Buddhist architecture and Sindhu Ghat.

Our bus journey was initially extremely comfortable until we reached Kargil around 8pm in the evening, from there we were completely feeling the biting cold inside the bus which was around 1-2 degree Celsius and we were supposed to wait at Zojila pass until it is 3am (after 3am only the traffic will be allowed from Zojila pass). We wore whatever clothes we had to cover ourselves and even then, we could not bear the extreme cold of the Cold Desert.

Below are key places and food Joints we were able to pay a visit:

  • Indus Viewpoint (Sindhu Ghat)

  • Thikse Monastery

  • Sky-wok Restaurant, Leh market – Delicious Chinese food such as Momo’s, Fried Rice.

Stay at:

  • We had to spend the night in the JKSRTC Bus on the way from Leh to Srinagar

Day-13: Leh to Srinagar (via JKSRTC Bus Service)

After spending the cold and harsh night in the JKSRTC Bus at Zojila pass, finally our started moving again, once the Zojila pass was opened at 3am in the morning and we were in Sonmarg by 6am in the morning for a hot coffee and breakfast which was much needed at that point of time.

After breakfast, from Sonmarg lot of people started travelling in our bus until we reach Srinagar at around 9am and through out the way, we could hear them speak about the attacks in the Kashmir valley and how ugly it got for many tourists as their vehicles were also attacked. But everyone was re-assuring that the incidents were unfortunate and not deliberate ones and tourists are much secured in the valley. We reached back to our Srinagar Hotel (Walisons Hotel) who had assured us the Hotel room and kept our luggage while we were in Leh.

Below are key places and food Joints we were able to pay a visit:

  • Zojila Pass

  • Sonmarg

Stay at:

  • Walisons Hotel, Dal lake Boulevard, Srinagar – J&K.

Day-14: Explore Dal Lake & Return flight from Srinagar to Bengaluru (via New Delhi)

After a lazy leisure day yesterday, we were determined to make our last day of Kashmir Tour a memorable one.

We went out for a one final Shikara Ride in the Dal lake which was right in front of our Hotel and enjoyed it the fullest by visiting morning floating vegetable market on a long Shikara ride. Then we went for a walk around Lake Boulevard and visited J&K Arts Emporium to shop a few Souvenirs for our Kashmir Visit memories.

To end our long and fulfilling Kashmir tour on a high note, we had planned a grand lunch at Ahdoos Restaurant, Srinagar (one of the famous restaurants, for the Wazwan (a multi-course meal in Authentic Kashmiri Cuisine). We enjoyed the delicacies like Nadroo Yakni, Chicken Rogan-josh, Gushtaba, Rista (Mutton Dish Delicacy), Kashmiri Dum Aloo, Kashmiri Pulao … all this as part of Trami Wazwan (A grant Kashmiri Thali for INR.700rs per head).

Later we took a CAB, sent by our Hotel Walisons along with our Luggage, for our final ride in Kashmir to the Srinagar Airport. We boarded our flight to Bengaluru in the evening with endless memories of our 2-week long Kashmir Tour.

Below are key places and food Joints we were able to pay a visit:

  • Shikhara Ghat, Lake Boulevard, Srinagar – J&K.

  • J&K Arts Emporium, Lake Road, Srinagar – J&K.

  • Ahdoos Restaurant, Lal Chowk, Srinagar – For the amazing Wazwan (Kashmiri Multi-course meal)

Mode of Transport on our Journey:

  • We preferred Pre-paid taxis from the Tourist reception centers at every major tourist center in Kashmir. Luckily, we found our Taxi Driver from First Day airport Pickup to be reliable and well spoken, so we requested him to take us around Srinagar Sight-seeing on Day-1 and for the next day Srinagar to Gulmarg drop.

Then on Day-3, he picked us from Gulmarg and dropped us to Pahalgam as well.

Zahoor Bhai (Mob: +91-99064 61445) - Srinagar Airport Pick-up/Sightseeing.

  • For Pahalgam to Chandanwari/Betaab Valley trip we booked Pre-Paid taxi from Pahalgam TRC Taxi-stand (Tourist Reception Center) and it was reliable and peaceful as the price was fixed.

  • For Pahalgam to Aru Valley, we can visit the local taxi stand, which is little down the road from Pahalgam TRC, and we can hop onto a shared local taxi which will only cost 30rs per head. Otherwise, you will need to shell out around 800-1000rs for a Tourist Pre-paid Taxi.

  • For our Gurez Valley 2-day trip, we got the Taxi Contact from the Gurez Dawar Guest house Manager, as the roads are tricky and difficult and a known driver is much needed for such a journey, we got picked up by the driver from Srinagar and we spent 2 days travelling in same CAB around Gurez and for our return journey to Srinagar. The driver was very reliable and frequent visitor from Bandipora to Gurez which was very helpful in Navigating the treacherous border roads of Gurez Valley.

Altaf Hussain (Mob: +91-94690 76923) – Bandipora, J&K.
